The Museum of Byzantine Culture depends a great deal on the public to support its work. The bequests of two large private collections, those of Dimitrios Ekonomopoulos and Dori Papastratou, constitute the solid nucleus to which smaller collections have been added, such as some works from the private collection of Georgios Tsolozides.

The museum's collections are also augmented by new acquisitions, mainly made with donations from private individuals and institutions.

The permanent exhibition entitled 'The Twilight of Byzantium' was organised and its archaeological material conserved thanks to a generous donation by the Marinopoulos family and Carrefour-Marinopoulos SA in memory of Ioannis P. Marinopoulos.

Sponsors have also played a key part in the development of certain sections of the museum, such as the archaeological storerooms and the educational programmes. The storerooms were organised in part with a donation from Papastratos SIA; while the educational programmes were equipped and provided with pottery and mosaic workshops thanks to a donation from the A. G. Leventis Foundation, which also financed the production of printed material used by the instructors.
