Entrance is allowed up to 20 minutes before the end of the schedule.

Groups can visit after confirmation via telephone.

The Museum is closed on:
– December 25th
–  December 26th
– January 1st
– March 25th
– Easter Sunday
– May 1st (official holidays of the Hellenic State).

During the rest of the official holidays (Easter Monday, Pentecost Monday, August 15th and October 28th), the Museum is open according to the normal opening hours.

On International Day of Monuments, the Museum is open during normal opening hours, and the entrance is free of charge.

On Good Friday, the Museum is open from 12:00 to 17:00, on Holy Saturday, from

08:30 to 15:30 and on Easter Monday from 8:30 to 15:30

Admission to the Museum is free on the following days:

Free Admission is granted to:

a) Children and young people up to the age of 25 from the Member States of the European Union, upon presentation of their identity card, valid passport, or other official public document issued by a domestic or foreign authority confirming age and country of origin.

b) Children up to the age of 18 from non-EU countries, upon presentation of their valid passport or other official public document issued by a domestic or foreign authority confirming age and country of origin.

c) Students over the age of 25 attending secondary education (evening schools, Second Chance Schools, Vocational Lyceums – EPAL) and vocational schools (EPAS OAED) of the Member States of the European Union and the European Economic Area, upon presentation of a valid certificate of attendance stating its duration.

d) Accompanying teachers and students during educational visits of primary, secondary, and higher education institutions from the Member States of the European Union and the European Economic Area.

e) Beneficiaries of the Social Solidarity Income (SSI/KEA) programme and their dependents, upon presentation of their identity card and valid certificate of entitlement to free admission for the period of participation in the programme, as well as a valid document certifying their dependents.

f) Holders of a valid unemployment card issued in Greece, upon presentation of their identity card and valid unemployment certificate or recent renewal thereof.

g) Persons with disabilities and one accompanying person (the latter if the person with disabilities has a disability of 67% or more), regardless of country of origin, upon presentation of the Disability Card or identity card/passport and the EFKA Disability Certificate (decision of the Disability Certification Centre – KEPA) for residents of Greece, or an equivalent certificate from a competent foreign authority.

h) Parents of large families in Greece, until the youngest child reaches the age of 25, or regardless of age if any of the children have a disability, upon presentation of their identity card, valid certificate of large family status from the Supreme Confederation of Large Families of Greece (ASPE), and valid EFKA Disability Certificate (KEPA decision).

i) Parents of three-child families in Greece, until the third child reaches the age of 25, or regardless of age if any of the children have a disability, upon presentation of their identity card, valid family status certificate from the Municipality, and valid EFKA Disability Certificate (KEPA decision).

j) Parents of single-parent families in Greece, until the child (if only one) or the youngest child (if more than one) reaches the age of 25, or regardless of age if the child has a disability, upon presentation of their identity card, valid family status certificate from the Municipality, and valid EFKA Disability Certificate (KEPA decision).

k) Refugees, upon presentation of the International Protection Applicant Card, or the Travel Document under the 1951 Convention (passport of recognised refugee), or the Alien’s Travel Document (passport of beneficiary of subsidiary protection), or a Residence Permit.

l) Conscripts serving in the Greek armed forces, upon presentation of a valid Military ID Card, and those performing alternative service, upon presentation of the relevant valid certificate.

m) Greek Olympic medalists, upon presentation of their identity card and membership card of the Association of Greek Olympians.

n) Official guests of the Hellenic Republic, following a request by the competent Ministry (Protocol Office), the Hellenic Parliament, or the Presidency of the Republic.

o) Holders of valid membership cards of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), upon presentation of their identity card/passport or other valid public identification document issued by a domestic or foreign authority, together with their valid ICOM/ICOMOS membership card.

p) Members of the Association “Friends of the Museum of Byzantine Culture,” upon presentation of their valid membership card.

q) Active staff of the Ministry of Culture, the Organization for the Management and Development of Cultural Resources (ODAP), the Acropolis Museum, the Kanellopoulos Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine and Christian Museum, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, the Museum of Byzantine Culture, and the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, upon presentation of their service ID card.

r) Specialized researchers who have been granted a permit for the purpose of photographing, studying, drawing, or publishing antiquities, upon presentation of the relevant permit.

s) Members of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece, upon presentation of their valid membership card.

t) Licensed guides in Greece, upon presentation of their valid professional ID card, and students of the Schools of Tourist Guides of the Ministry of Tourism, upon presentation of their valid student ID card.

u) Journalists, upon presentation of their valid press ID card.

v) Holders of a valid Free Admission Card of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, upon presentation of the card.

w) Members of the Association of Greek Art Historians, upon presentation of their valid membership card.

Reduced Admission

Reduced admission (50% of the regular ticket) to the Museum of Byzantine Culture and the White Tower is available to:

a) Greek citizens and citizens of other Member States of the European Union aged over 65, upon presentation of their identity card or passport to confirm age and country of origin.

b) Accompanying parents during educational visits of primary schools from the Member States of the European Union and the European Economic Area.

c) Accompanying teachers during educational visits of primary, secondary, and higher education institutions from non-EU countries.

 

The following have the right to get free admission card valid for three years with a renewal option:
• members of the Central Councils and of the Local Councils of Monuments of the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
• members of Boards and Directors of Organizations supervised by the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
• teachers of Primary and Secondary Schools and professors of Universities (active, nationals and foreigners).
• graduates of Departments of History and Archaeology of the Universities and of Architecture Schools and Art Schools. Moreover graduates of Schools of Conservation Science – and conservators of antiquities in general. The above Schools may be either Greek or equivalent ones of the state-members of the EU. The postgraduate diploma holders and the Ph.D. holders of the above Schools have also the same privilege.
• the Museum Studies graduates of Greek Universities or of equivalent Schools of the state-members of the EU and the postgraduate diploma holders and the Ph.D. holders of the above Schools.
• Directors and members of the Foreign Archaeological Schools in Greece.
• the retired employees of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and of the Archaeological Receipts Fund.
• the contract staff of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and of the Archaeological Receipts Fund.

Notice on the procedure for issuing free entry cards

We inform the public that we no longer accept applications for issuing free entry cards to museums and archaeological sites.

Documentation for getting a free admission card:
1. Application.
2. Degree.
In case that you are a teacher, you should bring a confirmation, from which your employment relationship becomes evident.
3. Two (2) photographs.
If you want to renew your free admission card, you should bring one (1) photo and your old free admission card with you.

Visiting the Museum

For directions and other information see the Google map below. You may arrive at the Museum by car, public transport, motorbike, bicycle or walking.

Parking for cars and motorbikes
The closest parking site is located under the Municipality Building “City Hall ” parking station.

Bicycles
There is a parking space for bicycles in front of the Museum entrance.

Disabled

The museum is accessible and friendly to people with special needs (Disabled Persons). It has:

  • lifting platforms (4)
  • wheelchair
  • WC for the disabled (3)

For visitors with vision or hearing impairment the Museum provide:

  • Audio guides with specifications for users with disabilities. The audio guides provide audio presentations to the Museum collections in the following languages: Greek, English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Hebrew, Turkish και Chinese.
  • Also, special audiovisual guides are provided in Greek Sign Language.
  • A guide of the Museum for Android and iOS devices is available for download for smart phones and tablets in the following languages: Greek, Greek Sign Language, English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Hebrew, Turkish και Chinese.
    The services above are provided free of charge at the ticket desk of the Museum.

For the blind people and people with limited vision we have a leaflet in Braille script (Greek-English), a special shaped outdoor exhibition with marmor artifacts and a program of audio-haptic guided tour through the Museum’s permanent exhibition titled “Touch and be acquainted with Byzantium” in three languages (English, German, Russian) and in Greek. Moreover we provide a special brochure for the escort. All these are free of charge by the use of entrance ticket.

All the events take place in indoor and outdoor areas of the Museum, in the atrium, in the reception hall and in the two auditoria (“Melina Mercouri” and “Stephanos Dragoumis”).
