Lecture with the title “Visual depictions of Saint Michael in the Americas between conversion and devotion”

14.10.2026

The Museum of Byzantine Culture cordially invites you to a lecture by Tamara Quírico, professor of History of Art at the Department of Theory and History of Art of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Uerj, Brazil).

The lecture with the title “Visual depictions of Saint Michael in the Americas between conversion and devotion” will be given on Wednesday 14 October (hour: 18:30, amphitheatre “Melina Mercouri”).

Saint Michael is one of the best-known figures in Christianity. Given that his visual representations were quite widespread in Europe throughout the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period, it is not surprising that they also reached the Americas and found particular penetration both in Spanish and Portuguese territories.

The speaker intends to analyze the contexts in which visual representations of the Archangel Michael, specifically related to the themes of the Last Judgment and Purgatory, are inserted in America, discussing similarities and differences between the solutions found in the areas of Spanish and Portuguese America. Moreover, she seeks to assess these images examining the religiosity developed in the New World by the colonizers, through official Church commissions and lay religious brotherhoods.

Entrance free.
