Amphitheatre "Melina Mercouri"
The Summer Program in Greece of Harvard University, one of Harvard’s most successful and oldest study abroad programs, is held this year between 25 June – 29 July 2018. With a focus on the comparative study of empires and migration from antiquity to the present day, the program offers eight relevant seminars to participating students who stay in Nafplio (home to the Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece), Olympia and Thessaloniki.
The 19 students and several of the professors will visit the Museum of Byzantine Culture on Friday, July 13 for a guided tour and attend a manuscript conservation workshop. Professor Ioli Kalavrezou of Harvard University will give a lecture on imperial self-presentation and the idea of empire in Byzantium in the amphitheatre “Melina Mercouri” of the Museum. The lecture concludes the weekly comparative seminar on the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. The amphitheatre has been kindly made available to the program by the Museum of Byzantine Culture.
