The Museum of Byzantine Culture in collaboration with the Department of Fine and Applied Arts of the School of Fine Arts of the University of Western Macedonia invite you cordially to the opening of the exhibition “Kampos/Field: the energy of the void” on Saturday, 28 January 2023 at 18:00 at the “Kyriakos Krokos” temporary exhibitions wing of the Museum of Byzantine Culture.
In the exhibition visual works are presented that explore contemporary approaches to the modernist “Field” and the Byzantine “Kampos”. “Kampos”, “Field” are words that transform the two-dimensional painted image into an ever-growing screen of ideas. “Kampos” is the starting point of the icon where the visual narrative will develop. “Field” is the infinite boundary of the image.
The exhibition Kampos/Field: the energy of the void in the Kyriakos Krokos Temporary Exhibition Wing of the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki functions as a point of interconnection of the past and the present or at least of the refreshing reading of these two historical terms through modern approaches. The sixteen participating artists with diverse visual expressions (paintings, installations, videos, objects, and digital works) develop contemporary ideas of the field and what it can point to in the contemporary context. At the same time, reference is made to timeless historical examples of works that refer to the concept of the kampos or the field.
A Byzantine icon of ca. A.D. 1400, donated by Irini Andreadi to the Museum, operates as an introduction to the exhibition and to the notion of the Byzantine background.
