“Olympus: Land, People, Light: Satsi’s Photographs from Post-War Pieria”

22.10.2026 - 10.01.2027

The Museum of Byzantine Culture invites you to the opening of the temporary exhibition “Olympus: Land, People, Light: Satsi’s Photographs from Post-War Pieria” on Thursday, 22 October, at 19:00.

The exhibition presents black-and-white photographs by the photographer Savvas Tsiligiridis (Satsi), documenting the landscapes and human activities of the Olympus region during the first decades following the Second World War. The photographs portray the majestic scenery of Olympus, the mountain of the Gods, alongside images of local communities and their everyday occupations, including ploughing, harvesting, and weaving.

Savvas Tsiligiridis (Satsi) was born in 1924 in Fatsa, on the Black Sea coast of Pontus, and settled with his family in Katerini in 1929, where he completed his secondary education. Abandoning his medical studies to pursue photography, he trained under some of the leading photographers of his era. Beyond his professional assignments, his camera captured nature, landscapes, people, and their daily lives with remarkable sensitivity and respect. His work has left us with invaluable visual records of twentieth-century rural life, as well as rare photographs of sites such as ancient Dion before its archaeological excavation.

The exhibition is particularly timely, as on 26 July 2026, Olympus was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in one of the most demanding categories of inscription, requiring the recognition and documentation of both the site’s outstanding natural and cultural significance.

Exhibition Duration: 23 October 2026 – 10 January 2027
