Saint George and Xenophontos Monastery on Mount Athos

This colored engraving was made and printed in 1798, by Nicephoros, a monk and painter from Karpenissi. Saint George is depicted killing the dragon; moreover, there is a view of the Xenophontos Monastery, whose patron Saint is Saint George.

Several additional elements placed in the angles frame the central composition; on top right Christ blessing the Great Martyr George, before crowning him; on the left Saint Marina praying with a cross in her hand. The engraving is among the first ones made on Mount Athos in late 18th century; their massive production was to follow in the first decades of 19th century.
