Room 5: The dynasties of Byzantine emperors
This exhibition presents the imperial dynasties of Byzantium in chronological order from Herakleios (610-641) to the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. The presentation is made with information panels illustrated by coins, manuscripts, minor art, and mosaics.

In the same room are displayed coins and hoards of coins from the Middle Byzantine period and a marble inscription concerning repairs done to the city wall in the reigns of the Emperors Leo VI (886-912) and Alexander (912-913).

At times of political or economic instability or enemy invasions or simply as a way of saving, the Byzantines hid purses or boxes of coins. These collections of coins are known as 'hoards' and are of special historical and numismatic interest.
